Inside House Studio

Recording Connection is proud to announce that our mentor studio House Studios has won the Washington City Paper honor of Best Studio in the DC area for the third time in three years. One of the readers had this to say:

A conversation with Recording Connection mentor Bill Davidow

Bill Davidow

Recording Connection mentor Bill Davidow is a producer, engineer, and the owner of Virlouise Recording Studios in Anaheim, CA. His impressive client list over the years has included Johnny Come Lately, Israel Houghton, Guy Fieri, Guitar Center, Los Angeles Women in Music and many others. Virlouise Studios works easily with many different genres, including pop, rock, jazz, hiphop and more. Bill talked with us recently about his career and his experiences as a Recording Connection mentor.

“I started [making music] when I was fifteen years old,” says Bill. “I chased around a guy who did live sound and would be that annoying intern asking lots of questions, but that’s what you have to do. We’d go down to the Washington Pier and try to meet artists and music people. I saw Jim Morrison get arrested there right after he signed with Elektra Records.”

The word “thorough” doesn’t even begin to describe how Bill integrates the curriculum with realworld experience when it comes to his Recording Connection apprentices. Besides teaching the basics and helping them learn their way around the studio, he teaches them the science of it all: the correct way to listen and observe sound. Bill enjoys teaching Pro Tools in his lessons as a staple of the learning process. “Pro Tools 11 is everything they said it would be,” he says.

Learn here with the Recording Connection!

Bill can’t help but brag a bit about his current apprentices. Nathan Lata, he says, is already producing high quality tracks at the age of nineteen. “His rough mixes are better than most seasoned engineers,” he says. Another apprentice, Christian Spurlock, recently accompanied Bill to the acclaimed NAMM trade show, where he got to make connections with a variety of industry professionals.

As to how he feels the Recording Connection measures up to other training programs, Bill is very clear in his opinions. “I once had an intern from Full Sail with what looked like great credits and credentials, but he couldn’t even tell me what some of the basic setups were in the studio,” he says. “As it turns out, he was offered those credits for simply just standing in the room during the productions.

“I love Recording Connection because it’s not a scam. Ninety percent of our students go right into jobs after completing the program with me. This is a really intensive program and then on top of that, I give them leads to follow. It pushes them forward in a way that the ‘cookie cutter’ schools do not.”

What a week! I finished my horror film teaser finally and uploaded it for the world to see. The teaser, in my humble opinion, is pretty bad ass. The only problem is that my teaser puts my script to shame and now I have to think of ways to make my script match the teaser!”
