Recording apprentice Ayaz Ismail works with Grammy winners to release Bollywood-style album!

"The language may be different, but the music is international."

Is This Love by Ayaz Ismail

With the help of mentor Rick Rooney at Planet Dallas, Ayaz Ismail of Carrolton, TX released Is This Love, a full-length Bollywood-style album (sung in Hindi) on Valentine’s Day this year. The pair recorded most of the songs at Planet Dallas, with three dditional tracks recorded at Luminous Sound in Dallas.

“I started this project 2 years back and my dream finally came true on Feb. 14, 2014,” says Ayaz. “This album is very special to me as the journey and experience was amazing. I worked with some great musicians, a mixing and mastering engineer from India who mixes for Bollywood films, Grammy winners, and a well-known Bollywood singer. My only dream is now to get a Grammy and score for Bollywood & Hollywood films.”

Ayaz openly credits his mentor for his recent successes. “This wouldn’t be possible without Rick’s incredible training and guidance,” he says. “I can now call myself a mixologist.”

Is This Love recently made the Popular Artist list on Artist Aloud, India’s number-one independent artist site. The album is currently available on iTunes, and all tracks from the album can be streamed via Ayaz’s YouTube channel.

CONTEST: Can you guess who now supports the Recording Radio & Film Connection?
Contest Hint

Hint: He is from a major country in Europe and lives in Los Angeles. His studio is in Santa Monica and he is considered one of the top three composers in the entire music industry. He is known for his use of orchestras mixed with electronic music. He doesn’t record his orchestras as a whole, but instead records the individual instruments and layers them in the mix.

He told us “The way you educate your students is the only real way to do it. I love the Recording, Radio and Film Connection because it makes sense and it is how I learned and how I made it. Your method works because it worked for me mad everyone else I know. My mentor was the great George Martin of The Beatles and I was his apprentice. That’s how I broke in. I support the RRF as the best way to break in to this business.”

Contest Hint

We reveal who our new best friend is in next week’s newsletter. If you’d like to guess, please sign up here. Guess right, and you could win a brand new Abelton Live or Pro Tools software package in the box! Entry must be received by 3/28/2014 - Good luck!

Maximizing Your Time at the Studio

Maximizing Your Time at the Studio - Bringing on the Bands
by Doug Boulware, RRF Co-Head of Admissions and in-house Audio Tech

As a recording apprentice, bringing an act into the studio is just one way you will get the chance to learn uninhibited. Doing something like this will give you a lot of creative control to play around with. Here’s how to go about it:

Find a band or artist.

Talk to your mentor or trusted studio owner/operator and ask them about their rates.

Ask whether you can get any kind of student or staff discount.

Combine your rate with the studio’s rate and have a discussion with the band to get started. (It is strongly advised that you do not go above the studio’s regular rate for at least the first couple of sessions.)

Schedule a date to get them into the studio and start recording!

Finally, think about YOUR personal rates for future projects, in addition to the rates discussed by the studio. How much do you want to charge them per hour? (Hint: starting out with a discount will drive more customers your way.)

Jim Martignetti

Jim Martignetti, owner and operator of Off The Wall Studio in Tyngsboro, MA, spoke with us in January about some of the various productions he has going on. His most recent project is a song he’s working on with Inspectah Deck from Wu-Tang Clan. Check out the completed song, “King of Kings” by D. One ft. Inspectah Deck and Capone (C-N-N).

You could say that one of Jim’s defining genres is old school (90’s) hip-hop and rap, but he enjoys putting music together in all of its forms. In addition to his success working with major hip-hop artists, Jim was able to help Sunrunner score an article in the Press Herald Read by mixing and producing their new full length record “Time in Stone” read the full article online at
