Your mentor will take you under his wing.

"I am really enjoying working with my mentor, he's laid back and really explains everything in such broad detail which makes it clear to understand. I look forward to coming into the studio every week."

No matter your experience level, there is always more to learn.

“This lesson was a big help for me. I already knew a few things about consoles, but it was a real blessing to be able to sit down in front of one and go over what each knob does. It’s a big difference between the digital and actual consoles. It’s easy when you can do everything you need to do with a mouse, but when you’re in front the board you have to have skills!”

Beyond the curriculum.

“I’ve learned so much from being in the Recording Connection program. So far we just got finished a lesson about preamps and the different types, like tube and solid-state preamps. I also learned that it’s good to have multiple preamps because different preamps have their own unique style and can make the instrument or voice sound just the way you want it to.”

The best way to prepare yourself for a job in the music business.

“Another thing he got me on was the proper way of the terminology such as – ‘Room Mics and not Ambient Mics’ – he said better learn the way real engineers say it and not a book cause you will sound like an idiot in front of professional engineers, and you don’t want that! Favorite lesson so far!”

Get involved in real client sessions.

"This session really showed the importance of preparation when recording a full band because just setting up mics took a great deal of time, as well as breaking it down."

Learn the tricks of the trade in the only place that really matters.

“I got to do some practice mixes of the country band my mentor had recorded recently, but mostly I was observing him re-doing his mixes for the track been he’d recorded several weeks prior. He did talk me through most of his decisions, which was helpful for me, and I was even able to make some suggestions that he took every once in a while, which was nice. Made me feel like I was getting a better grasp on everything.”

Achieve your goals and jump-start your career.

"I have an amazing teacher and he just breaks everything down to me, takes his time and makes sure I understand. But I have more to come so I’m ready to work. I’m chasing dreams each and every day."

Learn the fundamentals from a veteran audio engineer.

"I learned a lot about automation. We had talked about it a little bit the last time I was at the studio but it was somewhat brief. I hadn't tried it before at home and my mentor showed me all of the different ways it can be used. Trying automation for the first time was a lot of fun."

Improve your technique as you extern.

"I really like what I’m learning, there’s always something new to pick up or expand on. I like how the program is set up, and I am glad I was able to see how tracks are actually recorded and what the process is like. My mentor is a great person to work with and he is always able to answer my questions."

One on one learning.

“I was slightly overwhelmed going into digital audio basics, my lessons are covering sampling rates, bit rate/stream, all the different types of files records can be converted into and basically converting audio from a sound into a visual thought for a system or computer. It turns out that, after my lesson with my mentor, none of it was confusing or over my head whatsoever.”

“My mentor also helped me out going over using gates and expanders in pro tools along with reverb plugins. Overall I feel I have a pretty good understanding of all the signal processors that we went over in that past few lessons.”

“The last time I was at my mentor’s I learned so much not just in mixing, but also in creating songs as well. I was able to understand mixing so much more with him than just by myself. That day really opened my eyes for so many possibilities creatively, both musically and sonically. I hope to continue working with my mentor to finish that mix session he had me start on and see just how much higher I can soar.”

Get Trained by a Real Professional

“Last lesson, my mentor and I talked about other kinds of digital effects like digital reverb, and how you can create different halls, chambers, plates, and acoustic kinds of reverb, all within the computer. Doing this program has made me realize it’s pretty amazing how we have changed so much because of the digital era we live in!”

It is Important to Understand the Basics

"I have mad respect for engineers because now I truly understand the process/buildup of a beat from the ground up."

There is a Right Way to Learn.

"I enjoyed myself so much this session that I didn’t notice were the time had gone. My mentor told me I could leave around quarter to ten. I left the studio with much anticipation for my opportunity to sit in on the next musician."

"I'm really stoked on working with my mentor – he’s not just a professional, he’s a cool dude and I hope to learn a lot from him!"

Real Sessions, Real Experience

“I have reached the midpoint of the program and things are going really well. I was also able to do a mix down of a hip-hop song and by putting my knowledge to the test in the mix it came out very well. I am very pleased with the experience I’ve gained!”

The best way to learn audio engineering is at a real recording studio.

“My most recent lesson was about compressors, how they work and the proper ways to use them in mixing. My mentor has a lot of awesome compressors including an 1176, LA 3A, and a Fairchild compressor. He showed me all the different settings on each one and the unique things that each one did. He also showed me the Lindell compressor he had just received. It is meant to emulate the 1176 with the output and gain knobs as well as the side buttons. Seeing all the outboard gear he has is awesome, before I had only worked with plug in emulations of those!”

Work with real artists as you learn.

“I just witnessed my first live, vocal, recording session! It was a couple hours later than scheduled, but once the guys got there, it was cool to kick back watch how it all went down. Overall, it was a fun, learning experience, but I hope I get to see more than just vocals next time!”

Achieve your goals of becoming a music producer.

"Gaining the skills to do this, and working with an artist who has talent, and a message to get across, is what I want to do. I can help and support other musically talented people create their works of art for people to listen to, and show off their magic. The vibe that I get from being in the studio, as well as the feeling of the butterflies flowing through my body, is what I want all of the time."

Work with real artists as you learn.

"Working with a lot of different people, of the studio I'll be honest, I didn't know most of them (local bands) just because I don't know all of the bands out there but I did get to work with a pretty famous guitarist. He's a metal guitarist, that was a pretty cool moment when I realized "Wow, I'm working with some pretty famous people right now" and just sitting in and listening in on how they talk to one another and stuff is pretty cool. There was one session in particular where a mastering engineer came in and talked, they had a class from the Art Institute come in and I got to sit in on it which was kind of a bonus at the time. I didn't know who he was but he was actually pretty famous guy who had worked with a lot of big names and that was pretty cool… It's pretty interesting how big names come through there, they're just people, they treat people the same so it was pretty cool."

"At first I was kind of nervous and excited at the same time but it was really cool (to start the program). The guys of the studio I went to in Seattle were really cool and down to earth and I thought that we got along right away and it kind of help me build my confidence."

Learn by doing.

“After we got done going over a lesson, a female artist wanted to tune her vocals so my mentor asked if I had time to stick around, and I did. This part was really interesting because I had never seen this been done before. My mentor used a program called Melodyne or something along those lines to tune the artist’s vocals. They took each verse and tune each one that they felt needed it. The artist and my mentor then recommended putting a bass & cello in the song which was pretty cool to see how my mentor set those up and see what plug ins were needed!”

Learn the fundamentals as you extern at a real recording studio.

“We went into using expanders and gates. He showed me how to the sound can be affected with different attack times mainly on drums. He also helped me prep for my own upcoming drum session. Overall I learned a lot of different things this week!”

Your mentor will personally guide you through the curriculum.

“My mentor been very helpful in my journey. Helping me to get past the technical side of this schooling and making it much easier to understand. When I finally do understand it, it’s so exciting and makes me want to learn more. For example, last week I was having a difficult time understanding the “ins and outs” of patch bays and signal flow. Especially the part about configuring the patch jacks. But once my mentor was able to explain it in simpler terms and show me how it all worked, hands on, I was able to answer his questions and go back to the lesson this week and find that I understood it ten times better.”

Jump start your career.

“I am excited about everything I am learning and look forward to the real life application aspect. My mentor explains everything thoroughly and leaves none of my questions unanswered. Simply being enrolled makes the idea of making a career out of music more real and serves as the perfect motivation.”
