Situated in northeast Oklahoma about 100 miles from Oklahoma City, the city of Tulsa is the second largest city in the state. Although not a town many people might associate with the music business, Tulsa has actually been quite influential to the evolution of music, particularly in the country, cowboy, rockabilly and western swing genres. Tulsa’s historic Cain’s Ballroom (still an active venue) is credited as the birthplace of western swing. The country-rock hybrid ‘Tulsa Sound’ that developed in the 1950s and 1960s had a wide reach, its influence reaching as far as British rocker Eric Clapton. Since that time, Tulsa’s input into the music scene has continued into the pop, rock and alternative genres. Notable bands and musicians with ties to the Tulsa area include country legends Roy Clark and Garth Brooks, pop-rock band Hanson, indie-rock band Admiral Twin, R&B-funk band The Gap Band, and American Idol winner David Cook, just to name a few.
A number of recording studios in the Tulsa accommodate the ongoing needs of the music scene here. If you are considering a career in audio as a recording engineer, live audio engineer or music producer, Tulsa holds plenty of learning opportunities.
