Located about halfway between New York City and the state capital of Albany, Poughkeepsie is bordered by the Hudson River to the West. Many residents head to New York City for work, riding the rails to get to the office. The Poughkeepsie Station acts as the northern terminus for the Metro-North Hudson Line, with trains leaving every 30 minutes during weekday rushes.
Which isn’t to say the town is deserted during the week. For a time, the city was the location of the main IBM plant, producing the computer that beat chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov. It still acts as the main design and manufacturing center, concentrating on the newest mainframes.
Marist and Vassar colleges are located here as well, providing a youthful influence on the entertainment of the town. There are several live music venues in Poughkeepsie offering a wide range of music from indie to electronic to rock and heavy metal. Even classical music is represented thanks to the renowned Hudson Valley Philharmonic which calls Poughkeepsie home.
You may already be part of the Poughkeepsie music scene. If so, are you looking to improve your sound or does working the other side of the glass appeal to you? You may think you need to move to the big city to learn the music industry. Think again.
