“Today, I went into the studio and my mentor got me started right away on a project that he said would take up the whole day. He told me to go into the mic closet and get a Sennheiser e 609, as well as one of his ribbon mics, because we were going to mic an amp which my mentor hooked one of his keyboards up to. I put the e 609 only a few inches away from the grill facing the center of the cone, and I placed the ribbon mic directly behind it, separated by almost a foot. I then was assigned to set up headphones, which I plugged into send A + B in the wall. After this, I did a beat machine to a separate channel and my mentor set up a loop machine for the keyboard. He then told me to wire certain outboard effects and put it onto a bus channel so it could be used to affect all channels. I needed a little help with this part but I feel like I’m really getting the hang of it. After all this, I opened up Pro Tools and started a new session, set up all the channels on the program including a click track, and enabled each track to record. My mentor then went out and laid down a basic melody on the keyboard, which he looped, and came back in to inspect it. H e showed me how to pan out the sound from the mics on the board to achieve a stereo sound and then he went back out to add some beats to the melody with his beat machine. When all the recording was done, my mentor showed me different functions that can be used in Pro Tools, like how you can move pieces of a recorded track around to match the beat by snapping them to the grid supplied by the click track speed, and different plug-ins pre loaded on the program. My mentor and I arranged to have another lesson in a few days as well. Today was a very fun, hands-on day for me, and I learned a lot."

"In my session with my mentor this week, he basically went through all the plug-in types and the specific ones he uses himself for recording, as well as how to navigate through Pro Tools. We went over Reverb, Modulation, Dynamic, and Effects. We next went over how to start a project in Pro Tools, create new tracks, and assign plug-ins to a specific tracks. I feel amazing right now! I have learned a ridiculous amount from the time I started with my mentor, up until now. My mentor is a very inspiring mentor, which helps me a lot to understand what it will take to get to where I want to as, well as has opened my eyes as to the many opportunities for my career in the music industry. The Recording Connection program is an amazing experience. I've already started producing my own tracks and as I currently work towards my certification, I am I am working on my first one recording ever."

One on One Instruction in Pro Tools
"I have been working on a Pro Tools project with my mentor all this week. I have been learning the shortcuts, and how to use the Pro Tools program effectively in order to accomplish a project, which has been at the forefront. The more I use Pro Tools, the more I know how much I have to learn! So far this week, I have been adding midi parts, learning mute, save, as well as other shortcuts. Also, using the different tools to adjust the type of instrument, length, and pitch of notes has occupied a lot of my time with my mentor this week. My first project has almost all the musical and vocal parts, in which I will then be ready for equalization and mixing. Now, from my mentorship, I know ways to make my next project easier and better!"
