“Today was my first real recording session at my mentors’ studio. My mentor was the head engineer for this session, as the client was a well known YouTube celebrity. I learned quickly from my mentor before the session that his client was not only famous on YouTube for her singing, but also her autism awareness and anti-bullying campaigns. My mentor had received a call from a man who works in television with this client, where they work on filming autism awareness video. They were looking for a local studio to donate their time and record her singing a cover song. This session will also be filmed and put up on the clients’ YouTube, as well as the final produced educational video on autism. My mentor offered the time to not only help out the cause, but to promote out studio on one of the highest hit YouTube channels out there. During the recording session at the studio were my mentor, the client, the clients’ father, the television producer, and myself were present. I was so excited to get started! The artist brought a minus track of Demi Lovato’s song “Skyscraper.” We loaded the audio from the disk on to Pro Audio, and put the client in the vocal isolation room with headphones and the mic. We recorded her singing the song 4 times completely through. After she laid down her vocals, my mentor started doing vocal comping from the takes we had while the artist and her “team” ordered pizza and socialized. What I love most about my mentors’ studio is the comfortable, laid back feeling clients feel during sessions. We all sat and socialized and everything felt so relaxed. This is a great atmosphere for clients to be in while my mentor and I are working on the audio, as they have to do a little waiting around! My mentor explained to me that vocal comping is when the singer sings the song all the way through more than a few times and we take the best takes from each one and create one great vocal audio made up of the singer’s best moments. We also worked on auto-tuning as well while we were doing the vocal comp. The entire time this was going on I got to sit right next to my mentor behind the console and truly watch and learn! The television producer also filmed me behind the mixing board with my mentor for the video! When we finished the vocals and wrapped things up, I shook hands with everyone and we said our goodbyes. This session was amazing! Not only did I get to learn vocal comping and auto-tune, but I got to be in a professional recording studio atmosphere and deal with clients! I felt like I belonged there!”

“Lately I have been in my mentors’ studio roughly 3 times per week, solely focusing on "apprentice" days under my mentor. I have been having an amazing time sitting in on sessions for my mentors’ clients, where I get to see production and engineering first hand!! I have had the opportunity to set up mics, help with lyrics, and also look for flaws in the mixing of the final recording. I love the Recording Connection program and I haven't even had my first lesson review of the reading I was assigned by the program!! I love this program and I already feel very involved in the flow of the studio!!”
