“Today's training lesson with my mentor started with my mentor and I setting up a drum set to be mic'd up. I mic'd up the drums which totaled 7 tracks. Then my mentor played the drums as I sat in the control room and set the levels. Next I recorded the basic drum tracks, which allowed us to overdub the guitar, bass, and vocals. Every engineer has their own creative way of micing drums so I got to learn from my mentor so I decided to use his theory. I recorded my mentor playing the bass, followed by guitar, and finished up with the vocals. The lab was very helpful to me as far as doing everything on my own. After the tracks were recorded and doubled up the guitar and panned left and right. In my opinion this gives the guitar a warmer, fuller sound. I used an amplifier plug-in for the guitar to give it some edge. With the vocals I did a little pitch correcting and added some reverb. To me, this lesson was very helpful for me because of the hands-on training and practice.”
