“This week with my mentor I learned a lot more about different transducers; I already knew the two types of dynamic mics, which are moving coil and ribbon. However, my mentor and I still went over everything well. My mentor then took around 20 microphones out of his mic locker and quizzed me in full detail on whether they were dynamic, and what kind of dynamic, or condenser, and whether the condensers needed phantom power. I enjoyed learning that dynamics are best used when there are many instruments or severe loud ones, and one should really only use the condenser for overdubbing vocals. We also talked in great detail about all the polar patterns and directional responses from microphones. Next, we moved on to watch the video that my mentor and I had mixed together from the last hands-on session that had taken place last week. However, this time it was the final cut. It was for my mentors’ band and now I am excited to report that they were invited to play at a well-known lounge. His drummer has amazing talent, not to mention coordination, since he's also the lead singer!!!! My mentor plays the lead guitar and sings back up. He has a really awesome guitar solo that rocks out!!! I watched my mentor mix for a band that he signed on as a client, and apparently, the band got a license deal so we were mixing an LP with no vocals. This week was very fun and extremely educational.”

Learn the ins and outs of the Recording Industry
"When I got to the studio, my mentor showed me a job he was working on in Pro Tools. He showed me what he was doing, and how he was doing it. Then, my mentor let me sit at the computer and mess around for awhile with Pro Tools. I got some good practice and skill honing. It was also very interesting to see the other parts of the job besides just recording music, where we messed with an audio book, which was very cool because it’s always good to ask the pro what they choose and why, so I feel I learned a good amount during this session."

Learn By Doing
“Me and my mentor first went over the lesson quiz, then he has me do more hands on stuff, like setting up mics and working on Pro Tools, as opposed to explaining in detail what I read in the books. My mentor is a great teacher and I enjoy working with him, plus he allows me to hang out afterward on his sessions with recording clients.”

Learn how to use Recording Industry equipment
"Today, when I got to my mentors’ studio, I was able to take down a recording session from the weekend, which was just a neat little learning experience. Then, my mentor showed me the band he was recording, and I got to see him work with it, and even let me give my input to the sounds as well. Next, my mentor asked me to setup a new song, as well as the program in Pro Tools to go along with it. I got to manipulate the 4 recordings, get them at the same volume, and decide which ones I liked. I picked two songs, and then manipulated them, which sounded great… The experience was very fun and good for me!"
