Intro to Recording Your Music

You’ve been singing and performing in indie clubs for years, your myspace page has hundreds of fans, and you’ve already been mentioned in some music articles. The next step you might be thinking of taking is “how do I get my music recorded?”

This may not be as difficult as you think. Getting a record deal can be difficult, but recording your music is not. The first thing to do is to look up studios, or ask friends or other bands where they recorded their music. It is important to find a music studio, at this point, that has a decent price and will make a good record for you.

Once you’ve found a few studios, visit them beforehand and talk to whoever will be producing or engineering your record. See what they are like, if they have the same vision for your music as you do, and check that they know what they are doing when it comes to the equipment. When you consider recording studios, also keep in mind that they must have the newest technology to make your music sound the best and make it stand out. The area must also have enough space for you and your group to work. Check all the technology to make sure it is working. Try singing in the area to make sure the acoustics are good. Ask them what other records they have produced and do some research on those artists. You must pick a studio that is a good fit for you. That is the most important rule of “how do I get my music recorded?”

Once you have picked a studio in which to record your music, decide what you will be recording. Do you have a song limit? Can you only record two hours of music? Make sure that when you recorded you recorded your best and favorite songs.

A&R representatives do listen to a lot of indie artist demo’s, but they only listen through 20-30 seconds of the song before they decide to send out rejection letters. It is important to record a piece of music that is both original and unique, as well as attention-grabbing. Music must be new and interesting, otherwise no one will listen to your recording. Your music must be original from the thousands of songs that are already out there.

For those asking the question, “how do I get my music recorded?,” it is not that hard. It requires some money to rent out a studio for a few days, but the average record takes 90-120 hours to make. In the end, the result may be worth it.
