How Record Deals are Made

You’ve seen Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Toni Braxton on television as a child and decided that you want to be just like them when you can grow up. While that is a difficult goal, it is not that impossible as you may think.

By this point, you will have also gained some experience. You’ve trained your voice by singing at home in the shower for years, you’ve been participating in youth groups and concerts… now, you’re asking yourself, “How can I get a record deal?”

Well, you can sign up to be on American Idol, X-Factor and hope you’re the next Susan Boyle or Kelly Clarkson, but this is unlikely to happen. Winning a music contest is difficult and most of the time, the “judges” pick the wrong person. Sometimes, it seems as though going out to get your own record deal is the only solution, though most think it is impossible.

The first step to getting a record deal is recording some music. Do what you do best and put it on a tape. Make sure you a performing an original piece of music that also sounds unique. Record producers do not want to hear kids singing songs identical to the ones on the radio, they want to hear something entirely knew to add to the industry.

How can I get a record deal by being unique? The best way to sound unique is to put yourself on the record. All people are unique, therefore it should make the music sound unique as well. This tip is also key to capturing an audience. Most people listen to a particular artist because there is something particularly likeable there; usually people just see themselves in the artist.

The second thing to remember as an artist, is to always make a spectacle of yourself or have some type of unique personality that you can present to the world. Lady GaGa became famous not just because her music was good, but because it was easy to remember the girl with the strange fashion sense and no pants. If you are not an extrovert like Lady GaGa, you must have a very personable shy personality. There are plenty of artists, for example Taylor Swift, who appear to be “normal” but have capitalized on that.

Before you can get an A&R rep to listen to your demo however, you must have some type of buzz or fame that would make the producer want to listen to your demo, unique as it is. Everyone wonders, how can I get a record deal? How can I get someone to listen, and to take notice? All artist must perform in places and generate some buzz from the public. Whether it is promoting your group’s myspace page or handing out fliers, this is one of the key steps to getting a recording deal.
