Best Ways to Record Music

November 18, 2011

What are some of the best ways to learn to record music? On one hand, the question may refer to a geographic location such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Nashville. Another way to look at it might be a physical location like a studio, the living room, or perhaps even in front of your computer.

Here, we will look at both questions. To find the answer, you might want to start with your favorite search engine.

So what is the best geographic location for music recording? Some would say it depends on the flavor, or genre of your music. If your music is country, Nashville, Tennessee might seem to be the place to go. However, what about the Bakersfield sound? This is a flavor of country music developed in the Bakersfield, California area. Think Buck Owens, who helped to bring the style to mainstream audiences, and more recently Country Artist Brad Paisley.

Then there is the Seattle “Grunge” scene with artists like Nirvana, and Alice in Chains.

The truth is, it really doesn’t matter where you live, or what your musical style is. If you look you can find a studio to record in.

Let’s delve into the other aspect of this issue; i.e., the physical location to record music.

Most professional musicians will go to a recording studio to record their music. There are several reasons for this.

First, a recording studio is soundproofed. In other words, it is isolated from outside sounds. This way music can be recorded without any interference.

There are professionals who are able to run the soundboard, and mix the various vocal tracks, instruments, and other sounds that you may want to include in your recording. Some recording studios may record the instruments and vocals separately and then mix them later. Others might record everything together, and perform audio enhancements to make the sound better.

Another way to record music is at a live venue. Many musical artists will often record a live album during a concert tour. You can easily tell the difference between a studio recording, and a live recording. Usually, you can hear the crowd cheering the musicians on.

Professionals who are well schooled in the art of recording music engineer both the studio and live recordings.

With the proper equipment, you can make a digital recording of your music as you play. There are computers that have software and connections that will allow you to record your music directly to your hard drive.

In conclusion, the best location to record music, is truly whatever works best for you.
