Where to Find Recording Schools

November 18, 2011

When you think of recording schools, you are usually considering a school that will teach you how to produce and record music.

If you have a talent for what songs sound good when you listen to a garage band, or have a desire to become a record producer, then you should look into finding a recording school.

There are several ways to find such a school. For example, you can look in local publications, you can inquire at a university or college, and you can look in the yellow pages.

Another, Twenty First century method is to search the internet.

One option is is The Recording Connection. This school pairs you with a recording business professional. Working in a one on one environment, you are taught everything from the ground up, by a person who does what you want to do for a living. You will learn by doing, instead of reading a book, and then trying to put into practice what you read.

Another school you can find with an internet search is called Full Sail University, where you have a couple of options. You can attend their campus in Orlando, FL if you are able to get there, or you can attend online.

If you choose the online study, you will learn Music Theory, which will give you the basic building blocks to create a new composition, Composition, where you will learn the nuts and bolts of writing a song from start to finish,  Engineering, which teaches you how to digitally record your song, and Marketing. Once you have written and produced your song, you won't make any money unless you sell it.

There are of course, other schools, and the inclusion of both Recording Connection, and Full Sail University is not to be considered an endorsement of either. Both are excellent schools, and their different techniques of teaching are both well thought out.,

On one hand, you have a more traditional approach, with classes, and books, and teachers. (albeit online as well as in a classroom setting) On the other, you have an apprentice tutor approach. If you choose the online study course at Full Sail University, you will need certain equipment to be able to complete the course requirements.

With Recording Connection, the equipment you use will be what your instructor (a working professional) uses on a daily basis.

So whichever direction you choose, decide on the basis of what will work best for you.
