Audio Engineering School: What It is and Why You Need It

November 9, 2011

Audio engineers work with a variety of sound equipment to help the audio industry produce different kinds of products. Audio engineers often specialize, and if audio engineering is your science of choice you will have many different niches to choose from. Some audio engineers work in the film industry, managing and editing sound effects. Others work in radio, where they must use their sound skills to help manage live shows and keep broadcasting equipment in shape. Many audio engineering opportunities exist in recording studios where artists come to capture their sound and mix it properly.

With these audio options come a similar diversity in audio engineering education opportunities. If you are looking for an audio engineering school, keep in mind that price, location and specialties are all important considerations. If you are not looking for an audio engineering school (but still want a career) then think again. Because audio engineering is a technical field, it involves a lot of knowledge assimilation and science. On the plus side, this means that it is more likely you will be able to find a job when you enter the industry. On the downside, audio engineering does require some type of training. While you can learn a lot from experimenting with personal software and the digital versions of most audio equipment, you will probably need some type of education in order to get a worthwhile job.

Where to Look for an Audio Engineering School

Audio engineering schools range from large and expensive to smaller, shorter programs that focus on only one or two aspects of sound but do not hurt your wallet as much. Choose an option based on your current position. If you have enough time and money, you can attend a large school with a four year degree that helps you train for a number of different applications. If you cannot move right now or need to save money, then you can choose one of the smaller programs that specialize in studio recording, electronic music production, or other aspects of audio engineering. These programs last anywhere from several weeks to a year or two.

What Makes an Audio Engineering School Good?

Audio engineering schools differ based on their practices and teaching methods. The best schools use a combination of many different tactics, giving students training time with teachers but also letting them work on the equipment with individual projects. Any school that offers internship programs where you can learn to deal with clients in a real job setting is also a good bet.
