What is a Music School?

November 18, 2011

The term, Music School may be just a tad misleading. Learning to play the guitar or piano is not the focus here. This is where you can learn to become a music producer.

What does a music producer do? Simply put a Music Producer produces music. They are the people that are in charge of the production of a Compact Disc, digital media or whatever forms the music you listen to appears. In days gone by, music was produced on vinyl long playing records, and on audio tapes. Today it can be produced digitally and played on a CD player, an iPod, or streamed.

A music school program will teach you what you need to know. Here are some of the things you may be required to know to become a music producer.  You will need to know some music history, and theory. If you understand where music has come from, you can help to form the direction it goes in the future.

People who work in the field of Music Production need to understand and use modern digital equipment. It is highly unlikely you will be working with audio tape, but it wouldn’t hurt you to understand how to record and edit tape.

For the most part, you will work with digital equipment, and software for recording and editing. Learning the software that is most often used in the industry is one of the keys to your success.

If you are not a people person, you might want to consider a different aspect of the music business. Music producers need to liaise with audio engineers, and the artists. (Musicians and singers) When a session start going south, the producer is often the person who has to convince the artists to do ‘one more take’; and you have to understand the equipment as well as if not better than the engineer.

The business side of the music industry is something you must learn. The producer has to be the one who works directly with the artists, the engineers, the representatives from the Record Label, and all aspects of the production. The producer is the person who knows what songs will be recorded, how they need to sound, what order they will end up on the CD, mixing, the whole nine yards.

One place you can look into is called Recording Connection Audio Institute. This school will pair the student with a mentor instructor who is a music professional. You will be taught every aspect of the production business in this mentor/apprentice method. You will learn by doing, and actually get hands on experience working with your mentor to produce music.
