Types of Programs Available for Recording School

If you are interested in entering into the music or audio recording industry, there is not time like now.  The opportunities that are available are endless.  The challenge will be to decide on what city to school in as well as what area to concentrate on while attending the recording school of your choice.

Audio engineering, one of the most sought after professions in the recording industry, includes sound recording and manipulation.  The truly trained audio engineer can work with digital as well as analog formats.  Today, sound is usually digitally recorded into computer software that allows the savvy audio engineer to manipulate it to be whatever he envisions.

Some schools offer a Bachelor’s within their program as well as a Master of Audio Engineering degree.  The problem with this situation is that you have to take core courses along with your recording classes and electives.  This type of schooling not only prepares you for working within the recording industry, but will allow you to teach as well which might be a desirable alternative to some graduate students.

Other schools specialize in more of a hands-on application which is very advantageous in a recording school.  Several schools throughout the country offer 44 week training periods and culminate with a certificate in audio engineering.  They will teach you everything from principals of engineering, application, acoustic principles, microphone technique, studio electronics and many other necessary courses to ensure your success in the recording industry.

Other recording schools offer a mentor-apprentice style of teaching which has proven to be successful for hundreds of years.  These schools offer the student the opportunity to learn from working professionals in a recording studio environment.  The student uses tools that he will be working with once he graduates which is a huge advantage in this industry.  This hands-on technique of training has proven to be one of the best ways to learn within the recording environment.

Another very big advantage to being trained by those already successful in this industry is that throughout the course of your apprenticeship, you will meet business associates and colleagues of your mentor that can prove to be very advantageous to you in your career.  The old adage, “it’s not what you know but who you know” is very true.  Ultimately what ends up occurring is that either the mentor or one of his associates hires the student after they graduate.  This is a big plus for this type of school.

Whatever recording school you end up attending just make sure you do your due diligence.  Make sure it’s in the city of your choice and you investigate all of the financial aid possibilities that are available.  This industry is exploding and now is the time to get in and learn everything you can to ensure lifelong success.
