Looking at Music Schools
In the last few decades, the number of music schools in the US has exploded. There are more than ever before and it can be very difficult to choose the right one for you. There are a few things, however, that you can do to help narrow down the search and find the right school with a program and classes that will benefit you the most without wasting time on schools that will take your money and give nothing back. Think about your needs when it comes to scheduling and how flexible you need a school to be for you. If you have a great number of other responsibilities such as other schooling, work and family then you should be sure that you find a school that will work with you to integrate itself into your life, and not expect you to work the other way around.
While many people have turned to online classes to make their education work within the confines of their life, this is not a good option for technical programs such as music school. You need experience hands-on with the hardware and technology being used in recording studios and sound booths. Employers will expect you have to spent a great deal of time learning with equipment similar to what they use, and any music schools you look at should allow you to get such experience. For this reason, more people have looked to non-traditional programs like the mentor-apprentice programs that allow them to learn directly from someone in the field with real world experience while also allowing them to work their education into the commitments they already have. This is an avenue you should certainly consider as you look at music schools.
Similarly, you should be sure that any program you enter will provide you with the education you need while not bogging you down with endless prerequisites and classes that have nothing to offer you in terms of practical knowledge. While classes that enhance your written communication skills and understanding of music may be indirectly related to your career they will offer you knowledge that will be valuable to your future. Classes in world history and European politics, however, offer little in the way of practical information that will help you in your career after you finish your education. These sorts of classes often lead students to being frustrated with their education, and all too often students do not complete their education because of these sorts of things. The music schools you look at should be sure to address what you need to know, and little else.
